pH

Understanding pH scale in car wash chemistry — why it matters for cleaning power and paint safety.

pH (potential of hydrogen) is a logarithmic scale from 0 to 14 that measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. In car wash chemistry, pH is the single most important parameter determining both cleaning effectiveness and surface safety.

How pH affects washing:

  • pH 0–4 (acidic): Dissolves mineral deposits like limescale and road salt. Used in the second step of two-step washing.
  • pH 7 (neutral): Safe for all surfaces but limited cleaning power.
  • pH 10–14 (alkaline): Breaks down organic dirt, oils, and insect residue. Most active foams operate in this range.

A common misconception is that higher pH always means better cleaning. In reality, excessively alkaline products (pH > 13) risk damaging paint, rubber seals, and trim. Fortis Foam PRO is formulated at an optimal alkaline pH that maximises cleaning while remaining safe for vehicle surfaces.

Always verify your working solution pH with a calibrated pH meter — dilution changes pH significantly. For a deeper dive, read our guide on active foam pH and paint safety.
